Missing your parents from overseas and hoping they could be closer to you (and your family) in Australia? If so, you could potentially sponsor your parents to migrate and live in Australia. Generally, the Parent visa is the appropriate visa option for Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents or eligible New Zealand citizens who wish to sponsor their parents to enter and remain in Australia.
Furthermore, if your personal situation and financial means permits it, you may want to choose the contributory parent pathway, which has a shorter processing time of six years.
An Assurance of Support (AOS) will also need to be paid.
However, please note that the Home Affairs charges for the contributory parent pathway can be quite significant; see below, in particular if both parents are being sponsored.
Sadly, the processing time for the non-contributory parent pathway is 30 years, which in reality is not realistic.
Moreover, depending on your situation, we may be able to assist you with the Visitor visa for visa periods of 3 years, 18 months or 12 months compared to the standard 3 months for Visitor visas.
Alternatively, we may be able to assist you with the Sponsored Parent Temporary visa. This temporary visa is a hybrid of a Visitor visa and a Parent visa and has a visa period of 3 years and 5 years, but more importantly, stay periods of 3 years and 5 years.
Basic Eligibility
Firstly, the adult child must be:
- an Australian citizen
- an Australian permanent resident
- an eligible New Zealand citizen
The adult child must also be settled in Australia.
Secondly, the parent must pass the Balance of Family Test, namely:
- at least half of the parent’s children live permanently in Australia
- that more of the parent’s children live permanently in Australia than in any other country
